YouTube TV is finally adding support for 5.1 surround sound audio to several streaming boxes, including Roku, Android TV, and Google TV. The company has been slow to roll out support but it appears the company is finally picking up the place.
YouTube, initially, launched the YouTube TV service four years ago in 2017. In 2021, it announced support for 4K, alongside that the company also announced that it is working on rolling out 5.1 Dolby audio. However, the initial rollout will be limited to select devices. As it turned out, the select devices, included TVs from Samsung, LG, and Vizio. Soon after, the Chromecasts also received support.

Now, YouTube has finally decided it is time for other TVs to receive support. The company announced the news through the official Twitter account. The tweets stated- “ YouTube TV is in the process of testing 5.1 surround sound support on Android TV, Google TV, and Roku devices. Barring any unforeseen issues, a rollout should be coming shortly.”
What’s more, the company posted a second tweet explaining that it is working on adding support for Apple TV, Fire TV, and game consoles. However, support for them is still under development. There can be several reasons for the same; YouTube might need permission from some of the TV manufacturers. Whereas, it might need some changes on other platforms before YouTube TV can support 5.1 surround sound.
YouTube has not rolled out an official timeline for the release of 5.1 surround sound to Roku and Android streaming boxes
Furthermore, YouTube has not rolled out any official timeline as to when it will start releasing support for Roku and Android-based streaming hardware. That said, a public teaser is good enough proof that the company is confident to release support pretty soon.
