After six months of silence, Chromecast with Google TV is getting a new upgrade. It’s not a significant upgrade, and it’s still on Android 10, but it’s something. The device’s security patch level has been updated to October 2021, and storage optimizations and management have been enhanced in version QTSI.210311.036. It also claims platform enhancements, such as improved Dolby Vision playback and DRM Video decoding efficiency. Users may expect additional new features in the next upgrade, which they should not release after another six months.

The Chromecast with Google TV hasn’t seen a firmware upgrade in a long time, according to 9to5 Google. That feels like a lifetime ago in the world of smartphones and applications. Users will be able to gain some much-needed enhancements to their streaming dongle at least now. The company has updated the security patch, which is perhaps the most critical aspect. Previously, the company has updated the patch until June 2021, which is insufficient considering the importance of security fixes. It’s only two months late now that the October 2021 patch has been applied.

Because the Chromecast with Google TV has a famously small 8GB storage capacity, the “storage optimizations and management enhancements” are beneficial. Chromecast users claim to have gained an extra 200-300 MB of storage after updating. It isn’t much, but it is better than nothing. In the settings, there’s also a new “uninstall applications” tab to help you clear out some space. A list of installed programs and how much space they use up is shown, making it easy to remove or clear the data/cache.

Some applications will be able to play in HDR10 and Dolby Vision videos. There are also additional performance enhancements for DRM video decoding, as well as the normal bug fixes and improvements that most people aren’t aware of but are still critical. There are no substantial new features or UI changes, thus this most likely suggests they’re planning a major upgrade for the future.
