VRR (variable refresh rate) is without a doubt one of the most important feature of the new HDMI 2.1 standard for gamers. Unfortunately, Sony hasn’t implemented this feature in otherwise excellent TVs including A80J and A90J OLED models. However, that’s about to change now. As it appears as if Sony is working on the promised VRR upgrade for these Sony TV models from 2021.
What’s more, the company will start the gradual deployment of the VRR software upgrade for Sony’s 2021 models in March. Vincent Teoh, a well-informed UK-based TV reviewer best known for his YouTube channel HDTVTest shared the information in a tweet.

Moreover, the update will arrive on TVs including the Bravia XR A80J and A90J listed above. However, the list doesn’t stop there it also includes LED models like the more cheap X90J and the very bright X95J.
However, the company has not released an official release date roadmap for the VRR feature. In addition to that, reports suggest the distribution may differ by location. When the latest firmware for compatible Sony television sets from 2021 becomes available, users will be notified automatically. That said, they can also check for it manually by going to Settings > System > About > System software update. Although there appears to be some conflicting information on this topic; Teoh confirmed that Sony’s planned 2022 TV lineup will enable VRR at launch.
