Apple unveiled the sixth-generation iPad mini this week, with cellular variants capable of connecting to 5G for the first time. It’s worth noting, though, that the new iPad mini’s cellular connectivity does not have support for speedier mmWave 5G.
Apple doesn’t have a cellular compatibility page for iPad models as it does for iPhones. The iPad mini’s absence of mmWave 5G capability may surprise some Apple consumers. Apple’s mmWave 5G support is now available to the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12 lineups. Also, it’s available for the cellular versions of the iPad Pro 11-inch and 12.9-inch.
On the positive side, the iPad mini, like the new iPhone 13 models, supports more 5G bands than the iPhone 12. And cellular iPad Pro model, according to Apple, is giving it better 5G coverage across the world than the iPhone 12 and iPad Pro.
Despite reports that iPhone 13 models will support mmWave 5G in more countries. The mmWave compatibility is only available to iPhone and iPad models sold in the United States. Thus its lack in the upcoming cellular iPad mini will likely only impact US users.
The mmWave is a series of 5G frequencies that promises ultra-high speeds over short ranges, making it ideal for densely populated locations. Sub-6GHz 5G is weaker than mmWave, but the signals travel longer, allowing it to better serve suburban and rural regions. Outside of the United States, all four iPhone 13 models support sub-6GHz networks, which are more frequent in nations that have implemented 5G.
The cellular iPad Mini price and order details:
