With Ethereum’s move from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake expected to be completed shortly; the hope is that the pressure on GPU demand will eventually ease and prices will return to normal. However, this may not happen until 2023. Because of this negative outlook, cryptocurrencies that can be mined with less expensive components such as an SSD or CPU have risen in popularity. In the first half of 2021, the Chia token created quite a stir in the storage sector. We are now seeing a similar movement with the Raptoreum coin (RTM). It can be mined using CPUs.

Raptoreum, on the other hand, favors CPUs with big L3 caches, such as the AMD Ryzen 9 3900 and 5900 series. Because it uses the GhostRider algorithm (a combination of the x16r and CryptoNight algorithms).

According to Bitcoin Press, AMD CPU shortages could come sometime next year, but supplies are currently stable.

RTM’s GhostRider algorithm resists ASICs by adopting intensive randomization techniques that become more efficient as the CPU L3 cache grows larger. This implies that lower-end and mid-range AMD CPUs aren’t ideal; RTM miners are focusing on high-end machines with 64 MB of L3 caches, such as the Ryzen 9 3950/X and Ryzen 9 5900X / 5950X. A single Ryzen 9 5950X could mine $4.16 per day at current RTM prices. Whereas, the Ryzen 9 5900X could mine $3.43 per day.

The Ryzen 3000 series has similar returns but is already less expensive, making it a better investment. However, because AMD no longer produces these, miners aren’t interested in such limited supplies.
