The Ryzen 5 7600X is one of the top CPUs for consumers on a tight budget. Recently, AMD released a new firmware update- AGESA ComboAM5PI 1.0.0.4 firmware with SMU 84.79.204 that mistakenly disabled cores on Ryzen 5 7600X chips with dual-CCD designs. This issue appears to be resolved by the newly updated AMD firmware with the new SMU 84.79.210.

Ryzen 5 7600X performance suffered because of the disabled CPU cores

Because Core0 was disabled by the previous AMD firmware update, performance on dual-CCD Ryzen 5 7600X samples suffered. The firmware attempted to boot from a single CCD in some instances, resulting in the system failing to post completely. It is likely that additional Ryzen 7000 CPUs were impacted as well. As a result, ASRock, Asus, and Gigabyte deleted the defective firmware from their respective X670 and B650 motherboard support pages as soon as AMD became aware of the issue.

AMD appears to have had little trouble resolving the problem, though. The upgraded software has already been given out to the chipmaker’s partners, claims hardware leaker chi11eddog. Although AMD changed the System Management Unit (SMU), which controls the processor’s clock speeds, voltages, and power constraints, the AGESA version remained the same.

By comparing the SMU version, you can tell the new firmware from the old one. SMU 84.79.204 was present in the previous firmware. On the other hand, SMU 84.79.210 is used in the new firmware. The most recent firmware has been installed to MSI’s AMD 600-series motherboards. It is important to note that the firmware is still in Beta stage. Therefore, you should upgrade the firmware at your own risk.

The Ryzen 9 7900 and Ryzen 7000 X3D components with 3D V-Cache are two recently announced AMD Ryzen 7000 non-X CPUs that are supported by the AGESA 1.0.0.4 microcode. The former is already on the market, while the latter may hit the stores in February. As a result, AMD still has time to iron out any bugs and prepare the firmware for the release of the Ryzen 7000 X3D CPUs.
