Gigabyte recently introduced its latest UD1000GM power supply and it is equipped with a new 16-pin PCIe 5.0 power connector. That suggests only one thing, Gigabyte has prepared a product for the future and it will power the future generations of graphics cards. What’s more, the connector can offer up to 600W, which is roughly four times what the 8-pin connector could offer.

Of course, the new product will replace the outdated 6-pin and 8-pin power connectors. As they cannot handle the 500W or higher GPUs; the fact is they were never designed to handle these GPUs. Now, a chip with three 8-pin connectors can support 3x150W, besides the 75W thanks to the PCIe slot. So, the user will get a total of 525W. However, it is not all about power, the single power connector will also reduce the cable clutter.

16-pin connector has the same size as 8-pin connector

One of the most notable aspects of the new connector is its compact size. Interestingly, it is equal to the size of an 8-pin connector.

Moreover, we will have to wait to see if it will be necessary to use the new connector for PCIe 5.0 graphics card certification. However, it is worth noting that not all cards will need 600W of power, but it won’t reduce the number of use cases of the new connector. The size of the connector makes it a contender for a universal connection.

Furthermore, the Gigabyte one PSU isn’t the first to claim PCIe 5.0 support. The first one was ASUS’ ROG Thor Platinum II PSUs. However, it didn’t feature four signaling pins that are required to meet the full 600W PCIe 5.0 configurations. Soon after, ASUS provided clarification and altered the specs stating that it now supports up to 450W over its cable.
