The Wi-Fi 6E routers are relatively new to us but the chip and modem manufacturers are working on the next big thing. In fact, they are working really hard on it. During the annual developer summit, MediaTek announced that it would unveil a Wi-Fi 7 network at CES 2022.
According to James Chen, MediaTek’s Associate Vice President of Product Marketing, the Wi-Fi 7 network is about 2.4 times faster than Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. It is worth noting both of the latter variants are both extremely fast by today’s standards.
However, increased speed is merely one of Wi-Fi 7’s prospective advantages. Chen also stated that the new standard will considerably reduce latency. It will benefit applications including games where every millisecond matters. He further added that Wi-Fi 7 would “play nice” with your neighbor’s Wi-Fi 7 networks, thanks to new technology that reduces interference from outside signals.

Despite the fact that MediaTek will demonstrate the technology at CES 2022 in January; Chen stated that the Wi-Fi Alliance is still “very early in the Wi-Fi 7 standardization process”. He couldn’t say when Wi-Fi 7 standards will be finalized Since the standard is “still under evolution”. Anyways, he did say that the Wi-Fi 7 specifications might arrive in “Q2 2022”. So, it is safe to assume that technology should be available in 2023.
