In a recent development, yet another NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 card has been affected by the 16-pin power connector meltdown. However, this time the owner didn’t bend or twist it unnecessarily. What’s more, the owner got to know about the meltdown before it could cause any real damage to the power connector.
His setup included an MPG A1000G power supply and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming X Trio 24G graphics card from MSI.
There is a huge thread on Reddit dedicated to the 16-pin power adaptor controversy. As of the time of writing, there have been 19 casualties, of which two involve the standard 16-pin power connector.

Original Story
You might have already heard stories explaining how NVIDIA’s 16-pin power adapter melting on the GeForce RTX 4090. But the horror doesn’t end there. A GeForce RTX 4090 owner has reported the first purported instance of a 12VHPWR power connector meltdown from a native ATX 3.0 power supply through Reddit.
The GeForce RTX 4090 is one of the top gaming graphics cards. It’s unfortunate that the 16-pin power adapter that comes with such an expensive product could be posing a fire risk to buyers. On Reddit, there have been 18 “confirmed” cases from various vendors of graphics cards. Nvidia looked into the problem right away and gave partners the go-ahead to return melted GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards to the chipmaker’s lab for examination.

The owner used an MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming X Trio 24G graphics card and MEG Ai1300P power supply, according to the Facebook post. Plus, the user chose an ATX 3.0 power supply with a native 12VHPWR power connector after reading about the horrifying user comments with the 16-pin power adapter. Sadly, the images revealed that the power connector had already begun to melt. A few of the ports already appeared to be damaged. The Facebook user stated he did not overly bend the cable. He’s been contacted by MSI to get a new graphics card and power supply.
Since Nvidia hasn’t released the findings of its inquiry, it’s possible that the business is still looking for the source of the issue. Only the 16-pin power adapter meltdowns have been observed thus far. We do wonder, though, if the problem extends beyond the layout of Nvidia’s 16-pin power adapter in light of this recent user report.
