Universal Flash Storage (UFS) has become one of the integral parts of Android smartphones. It was just a few years ago that UFS was limited to flagships and other high-end smartphones. However, the technology is now available in every smartphone since it has become cheaper. In fact, it has replaced eMMC in the majority of the budget and affordable mid-range smartphones. In other words, it has become the flash storage of choice for smartphone manufacturers. What’s more, UFS 3.1 has been in use since 2020; it is the fastest storage solution currently available for Android devices. However, it appears as if we are soon going to get a successor in form of UFS 4.0.

Samsung Semiconductor recently announced the UFS 4.0 storage; which is the next iteration of the Universal Flash storage. The new variant will offer serious performance improvements over its predecessors. For instance, the UFS 4.0 will offer speeds up to 23.2Gbps per lane. If we compare it with the older version; it is twice as fast.

Moreover, the new standard will also offer faster read and write performance to the users as well. Samsung said it will deliver sequential read speeds of up to 4,200 MB/s and write speeds of up to 2,800 MB/s. All of this is made possible because of Samsung’s 7th Gen V-NAND and proprietary controller. Furthermore, the UFS 4.0 is also much more power-efficient. Specifically, it will offer 46% improvements over the previous standards.

UFS 4.0 is based on the new JEDEC standard specifications

UFS 4.0 is developed on the latest JEDEC standard specifications. Although it is primarily targeted at smartphones as of now; companies might start using it for AR, VR, and automotive applications as well.

Lastly, UFS 4.0 chips will arrive in even more compact packages in various storage categories up to 1TB. According to Samsung, the product should go into mass production by Q3 2022. It suggests that the new type of storage should arrive for users in the market later this year or early 2023.
