Samsung recently announced four years of software update support for its smartphones. Later several other companies, including OnePlus, OPPO, and Xiaomi, also announced they will also offer four years of software updates. However, now Google has announced that it will offer the longest software update support in the history of the Android space.
What’s more, the upcoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are going to be the first smartphones to come out with five years of software support. CarphoneWarehouse’s website recently shared the details about the same.
According to the software section on the product page-“ Pixel comes with at least 5 years of updates, so it gets more secure over time ”. Nevertheless, the page’s terms and conditions section states “Android security update.” This probably means that Google will roll out 3-4 years of Android OS updates and 1-2 years of additional security updates.

Google To Offer One Year More Of Software Update Than Samsung
The coverage from Google is one year more than what Samsung currently offers for some of its mid-range and all high-end smartphones. Obviously, this is good news for the users. However, it is worth noting that Apple already offers 5-6 major OS updates to all of its smartphones. And we would like to see Google matching the standard of Apple. After all, Google develops Android for the whole ecosystem.
Moreover, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are Google’s true flagship. They come equipped with 120Hz OLED displays, Google’s in-house Tensor processor, new front and rear camera sensors. Plus, the phones also feature an IP68 rating, and they are also water-resistant.
