LG announced earlier its exit from the smartphone industry. At that time, the company assured LG smartphone users that it would continue offering software updates for some time. The important thing to note here is that it only applies to a few of LG’s latest smartphones. On the other hand, users with older phones have no option left other than installing a custom ROM on their devices. That’s the only way they can get the latest Android updates. Anyways, even that option won’t be available forever since LG will be shutting down its bootloader unlock service next month.

LG released an official notice to announce bootloader unlock service shutdown
According to a newly revealed Notice from LG, the company will discontinue the LG Mobile Developer website services on December 31. The notice unveils that “all information provided on the website and issuing the bootloader unlock key will not be available,” after the termination. This will make it difficult for the users to install a custom ROM on their devices. On top of that, the notice also states the company will destroy all personal information collected to provide the services. That said, LG will have to store some of the personal information if required by the law.
Now, if you want to keep using LG phones with a custom ROM; it is high time for you to unlock its bootloader before LG terminates the service next month. If you have an LG G8, G85, G8X, or V50 ThinQ, you can employ the unofficial universal bootloader unlock method to unlock the phone’s bootloader. However, it is worth noting that this method is meant for professionals or people with enough experience. It is not for beginners since it is a trick and needs flashing via Qualcomm SoC’s Emergency Download Mode.
