Developers of the Nothing Phone(1) have rolled out its first set of kernel source code. Previously, Linuxct, a security researcher, has revealed that the device should be bootloader unlockable. Now, it appears as if the device might also feature custom ROMs.
The news couldn’t come at a better time since the device was released on July 12th and the kernel details are released just three days after. The brand claims to be a pro-ROM and pro-developer brand.

Details about the Nothing Phone (1) Kernel source code
The newly revealed Kernel sources unveiled that Nothing Phone 1 is based on a modified Linux kernel. It is worth mentioning that the Linux Kernel is distributed under the GNU GPL v2 licence. As a result, companies that base their devices on the fork of the kernel will provide the source code when requested. It depends on the manufacturer when they want to release the kernel. Usually, the makers take a month or two to release the source, but they all do at the end. However, Nothing is not following that trend.
Moreover, the company has even released the full device tree, according to XDA Developers. This is not something that the developers usually release. This will allow third-party developers to modify the codes according to them. This all results in better quality of code as it makes the life of ROM developers a little easier.
No matter how fancy it may sound, we might or might not see custom ROMs in the Nothing phone. However, things look quite rosy as of now.
What’s more, if you are a developer who is looking forward to starting to build for device . You might want to navigate to the Nothing’s GitHub repository to get started. You will have access to all the required things to play with.
Lastly, Nothing is still new to the market. It will take the company quite a while to have a good developer community behind it. However, making the source code available to the general public should improve the modding scene for the company.
