Samsung has announced the availability of an Android 12 beta for the Galaxy S21 smartphone users. A few weeks before the final OS is expected to be released for the first time on Pixel phones. Samsung boasts that it manages to get these betas out a week or two sooner every year, albeit it’s just by a week or two this year compared to 2020.

Registration timing for beta program for Samsung Galaxy S21:

The beta program is open for registration from September 14th. The same day Apple has revealed the iPhone 13. To test it, users must first register in the Samsung Members app. And if history repeats itself, the number of free slots will be restricted. It is now only accessible in the United States.

The beta is for Samsung’s One UI 4, which is its own version of Android. That distinction is crucial since one of the most noticeable differences in Android 12 is its appearance. All of the buttons on a Pixel phone are large, and the colors vary dynamically based on your background, a design Google calls “Material You.”

We don’t know how much of Google’s design language Samsung will employ on the Galaxy S21 phone yet. One UI already featured a plethora of theming possibilities, and Samsung’s shop was brimming with more that customers could purchase (though most are fairly garish). Theme choices are particularly included in Samsung’s list of what’s new in One UI 4. Samsung’s official list is as follows:

“A wealth of theme options let you adjust the look and functionality of your device, giving you tools to configure your home screen, icons, notifications, wallpapers, and much more.
Redesigned, upgraded widgets offer deep customization — from visibility to appearance.
You also get convenient access to a more robust and diverse array of emojis all in one place.”

Beta features:

Samsung is also implementing Android 12’s graphic indications for microphone and camera use. It will also include toggles for totally turning off the sensors.

New widgets will also be welcome since the majority of them have starting to seem a touch dated across most Android versions. Samsung’s widgets, as you can see at the top of this page, are at least clean and have large rounded corners. However, they don’t go as far as Google’s new widgets.

With Material You, Google is becoming more opinionated on how Android should appear on its Pixel phones, and a key issue will be whether those ideas translate effectively to non-Google phones. For the past several years, Samsung has been heading in a reasonably consistent visual direction, but it’s one that employs more white space and larger letters than Google’s latest designs. However, we can see Samsung using some of the larger, bubbly rounded edges for alerts.

Is there a match between the two appearances? On a Samsung home screen, would Google widgets seem out of place? Will Samsung embrace the new locations for Android’s numerous system services that have been relocated? Owners of the Galaxy S21 will find out as soon as they dive deeper into the public beta.
