The Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro have received a new update that adds functionality for heart rate and respiratory tracking, which are currently only available on the Pixel series or other android devices other than Google Pixel 6.

These capabilities were introduced to the Pixel series in March 2021, although they weren’t available in the Google Fit app when the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro were released.

Some Pixel 6 users have reported that these capabilities aren’t yet accessible on their devices, but TechRadar can confirm that they exist on our Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro models. The function appears to be in early access for certain users. But there is no apparent explanation why some people can use it and others cannot.

This new function is accessible in the Google Fit app. And you’ll most likely need to upgrade the app to make use of it. Although Google has stated that this feature would eventually be available on other Android phones, we have yet to receive a firm timeline from the company on when it will no longer be unique to the Pixel range.

These capabilities are likely available if you buy a Google Pixel 3 or a more current smartphone from the firm.

How does it work, exactly?

The Google Fit app is where you’ll find Pixel’s new features with the Google Pixel 6 update. If you have a suitable device, the first tab, Home, will provide you the opportunity to accomplish things. Unlike other smartwatches and fitness trackers, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro lack a dedicated heart rate or respiratory tracker, instead, the functionality relies on a mix of camera hardware.

Google uses the back camera for heart rate tracking. It instructs you to sit in a well-lit area and lay your finger over the top of the phone’s primary camera on the back. It will then ask you to sit motionless for 30 seconds while it’s taking the reading.

This phone will use your selfie camera to detect your breathing. And you’ll be asked to put your phone up so you can view your face and upper torso. It will then record you sitting motionless and provide you with a breathing result.
