Xiaomi Mi 11 Series Android 12 Stable Beta Leaving Devices Bricked

Xiaomi several new products

Xiaomi unexpectedly released a ‘stable beta’ Android 12 update for pilot testers just a few days ago. Therefore, it has become the first OEM to declare the new OS stable version. However, some devices have now been reported dead as a result of this update.

The Android 12 update for the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, Mi 11, and Mi 11i, can hard-brick your phone and turn it into a paperweight, at least for the time being, according to Xiaomiui and user experiences from relevant communities. And it is unknown how easy it is to recover from the hard-brick state.

For the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, Mi 11, and Mi 11i, the problematic updates have version numbers 12.5.1.0.SKAMIXM, 12.5.1.0.SKBMIXM, and 12.5.1.0.SKKMIXM. Xiaomiui says that the issue is in the installation process.

As a portion of the prerequisites for the Mi Pilot Testers program, Xiaomi does issue a warning to always back up files. However, the unbootable issue is still surprising given that the builds were labeled as ‘Stable MIUI based on Android 12’.

Moreover, Wang Hua, General Manager of Xiaomi PR, recently stated that Android 12 still requires a lot of work. So, it is best to limit the OS iteration to Chinese beta testers for the time being.

If you want to try the new Xiaomi Android 12 update, back up your data

Users who want to try out Android 12 at this early stage should back up their data before installing any of the aforesaid updates.

For people who are not able to get back from the hard-bricked state, it is advisable to take their affected device to the nearest Xiaomi service station. Anyways, it is worth noting that brick is not the end state and one’s device can be recovered from, but with a likely loss of data.
