Microsoft plans to update Windows 10 once a year with any future feature additions, according to the company. Microsoft is issuing the Windows 10 November 2021 update starting today. And they will release the next big update later in 2022.
This update frequency is similar to Windows 11, which will similarly release new features once a year. “To match with the Windows 11 cycle, we’ll migrate to a new Windows 10 release cadence, aiming yearly feature update releases,” says John Cable, Microsoft’s president of Windows service and delivery. “The next feature upgrade for Windows 10 is scheduled for the second half of 2022.”
John Cable, Vice President, Program Management, Windows Servicing, and Delivery, highlighted a fundamental change to the way Windows 10 receives updates in the future in a post on the Windows Experience Blog focusing on the November 2021 Update.
New Microsoft Store to Windows 10 Devices:
Microsoft’s announcement of future Windows 10 feature updates comes after the firm remained tight-lipped about its plans during the Windows 11 launch earlier this year. However, Microsoft’s future plans for Windows 10 are still unknown. The November 2021 release is a modest one, with GPU computing capability in the Windows Subsystem for Linux being the sole notable addition for users (WSL). Earlier this month, Microsoft began rolling out the new Microsoft Store to Windows 10 devices.
Although the majority of Microsoft’s future Windows initiatives are clearly geared toward Windows 11. The firm will continue to support at least one version of Windows 10 until October 14, 2025. We could get two or three feature upgrades for Windows 10 before the end of the support date, but they won’t be major.
Today, Microsoft is also speeding the release of Windows 11. “Based on the good rollout update experience and user feedback we’ve received so far, we’re moving the rollout forward quicker than we had planned, and we’re now making the Windows 11 upgrade more generally accessible to eligible Windows 10 devices,” Cable adds.
