Windows 11 is creating problems for customers once again, this time it appears to be slowing down NVMe SSDs. We have come across several Reddit posts as well as Microsoft support forums posts and they are not new. In fact, these reports have been there for a while, when Windows 11 was still in preview. Now, people are facing the same issue even after two months of the launch.

According to claims backed up by popular PC drive benchmarking tools CrystalDiskMark and AS-SSD, Windows 11 can degrade NVMe drives performance multiple times in some circumstances. The issue mostly impacts random write performance, with most other metrics remaining unchanged. In any case, the difference is quite notable. The benchmark below, created by user MahtiDruidi and uploaded on Reddit, compares the identical SSD running Windows 10 and Windows 11.

What is slowing down NVMe SSDs?

We are not sure about the exact origin of the problem, but people have already suggested some potential possibilities. Users first noted out that virtualization-based security (VBS) reduces SSD speed. However, this too does not account for the entire difference between Windows 10 and Windows 11.

A more recent discovery implies that the problem is related to the location of the Windows 11 installation drive. When you run the benchmark on a secondary drive, the results will match the SSD’s quoted specs. The image below, submitted on Microsoft’s support forums by user PleasedPen25317, illustrates how significant the difference may be when comparing two 2TB Samsung 980 Pro NVMe SSDs on the same workstation.

Even if consider the fact that the Samsung 980 Pro is a PCIe Gen 4 SSD; the issue is also affecting PCIe Gen 3 drives. On a drive with potential speeds as high as this one, the difference is very noticeable, with the non-Windows drive being over five times faster.
