For decades, Dolby Atmos has been the leader in home entertainment sound technology.
Recently, Dolby Laboratories announced a game-changing tech that is set to revolutionize home theater audio setups: Dolby Atmos FlexConnect.
This innovative feature, which is currently being rolled out in partnership with TCL TVs, promises to further simplify and enhance your home theater experience. The potential for expansion to other brands is also on the cards.
So, let’s take a look at what exactly Dolby Atmos FlexConnect is and how it works.
What is Dolby Atmos FlexConnect?
FlexConnect is a new tech by Dolby that enables you to pair your TV’s sound system with certified wireless speakers. Setting up home theater audio was a challenge in the past because not all rooms were conducive to optimal speaker or sound bar placement. Factors such as room shape, size, furniture arrangement, and power outlet locations often posed obstacles.

However, with Dolby Atmos FlexConnect, these issues are a thing of the past. Now, you can place one or more wireless speakers anywhere in the room without worrying about achieving perfect placement. The sound will be optimized for any room layout and speaker setup, eliminating the need for meticulous speaker placement. Whether you’re adding a single speaker or multiple, FlexConnect ensures optimal sound quality.
How Does FlexConnect Work?
Dolby Atmos sound is renowned for its superior quality, as demonstrated in some of the best Dolby Atmos soundbars and speakers. However, it typically requires a very specific setup that may not suit every room. Whether a room is small, has an unusual layout, is filled with too much furniture, or lacks sufficient power outlets, setting up and calibrating Dolby Atmos sound can be challenging.
Enter Dolby Atmos FlexConnect. This innovative feature offers the convenience of wireless audio with the immersive experience of Dolby Atmos sound. It doesn’t require additional equipment or cables.
Instead, it uses what Dolby refers to as “acoustic mapping.” This process uses the microphones in a compatible TV to detect the location of every FlexConnect speaker in the room, irrespective of room size or furniture placement.
Once the swift, automatic calibration process is complete, audio is intelligently balanced between the TV and the speakers. Sounds are accurately placed around your room in a 360-degree soundscape, providing an Atmos experience no matter where you’re seated.
As of now, there’s no official launch date for the Dolby Atmos FlexConnect-certified TVs from TCL. However, they’ll be showcased at IFA 2023. Over time, we expect other TV brands to adopt this groundbreaking technology. If it lives up to its promise, Dolby Atmos FlexConnect could entirely transform the home cinema experience.
But, remember, it will require a new TV to reap the benefits of this innovation.
